    Air Quality Posted 11/13/18

    Good afternoon, Westwood families!

We wanted to reach out to you to share how we are addressing the needs of our students during this upcoming week of poor air quality.

We are monitoring the air quality hourly through which gives us directions on the air quality and suggestions on limiting outdoor activity.

We are currently at "orange" status (and have been since Friday). This means that the Air Quality Index is unhealthy for sensitive groups (which includes people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, and teenagers). The recommendations for sensitive groups are to "reduce prolonged or heavy exertion. It's OK to be active outside, but take more breaks and do less intense activities. Watch for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath."

For the week at Westwood, we have moved PE indoors (as it is considered prolonged, heavy exertion). We are also having students eat lunch in the cafeteria to minimize their outdoor exposure. Students are playing for their 20 minute recesses (mid-morning and lunch) outdoors, but the library is open for students to come to who feel they need to be indoors (those with asthma, strong allergies, just getting over a cold, or find themselves coughing/wheezing). Teachers and yard duty are actively watching for students who may be coughing/wheezing at the recess time, and directing students to the library for their recess.

If you are involved with the afterschool program KidztoPros, classes are still in session. If you decide to have your child not participate, please let them know your child will not be attending.

We will continue with this plan throughout the week, or until we are clearly moved back in to the "yellow", or moderate, zone. If at any time we move into the "red" zone (unhealthy), all activities, including recess, will be moved indoors.

    Thank you,

    Cori Ghaffari

    Welcome to Westwood!

    About Us

Westwood Elementary School is located in the Santa Clara Unified School District (SCUSD).  It was established in 1957, and parent-involvement has always been a wonderful part of our school culture.  In 1961, the parents of Westwood planted a forest of native Californian trees and shrubs. The forest, like our school, is uniquely beautiful and still thriving today! Our campus also boasts beautiful school garden boxes, and themed flags.

Westwood has a total of nineteen self-contained classrooms and currently is home to students from preschool through fifth grade.  Twelve of our classrooms support a learning environment of 26:1 ratio (grades K-3), and six classrooms support a learning environment of 28:1 ratio (grades 4 and 5). In addition, there is one SAI classroom (K/1), a speech therapy room, a multi-purpose auditorium, a library, and two computer labs.
